Melting port

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A melting port is a crucible-like vessel that is used in glass furnaces ( port furnaces ) to melt the glass mass therein. The melting of the sandy mixture takes place at 1500 ° C. Even higher temperatures can be found on the outside of the melting ports. Melting ports are made of clay.

Since the replacement of melting ports is time-consuming and leads to production downtimes, frequent replacement of melting ports is a reason for financial difficulties for glassworks . Melting furnaces remain at the same temperature during their operating time. Therefore, a melting port is exchanged at operating temperature.

In Germany, the Fastner company from Arzberg produces melting ports .
