history

Until the 19th century

Arzberg was first mentioned in a document in 1268. As early as 1408 it was granted city rights by the Burgrave of Nuremberg . Kaspar Brusch (ius) wrote in 1542:

“The Reßlau, an almost bright and fish-rich water [...] rises above Farendorff [...] from a mountain called Farenleut, which is a piece of the Fichtelberg, runs to Farendorff and Leipelsdorf [...] drinks in itself the Zweiffersbach, the Schnellenbach, runs from there to the residential area. Below the residential area on the Reßlau Dela and Laurentzenreuth [...] Below Laurentzenreuth, the Reßlau takes on the Goldbach. Below Seussena, a village, it again absorbs two beautiful streams [...] from Seussna the Reßlau continues and runs towards Arzberg [...] in it a very fortress and with a high strong wall preserved church today is still found and seen. "

From 1792 to 1796, the universal scholar Alexander von Humboldt lived temporarily in the city in his capacity as chief miner for the Prussian principalities of Ansbach and Bayreuth . He recorded his good memories of this place in these lines: “I live on the high mountains in Arzberg, a village in the Fichtelgebirge . The deposits are so interesting, I can enter several times during the year. I stumble with joy. "

Iron ore mining flourished there in earlier centuries. Former iron hammers were used as pipe smiths in the Gsteinigt, for example, from the 14th to the 17th century . A restored historic hammer forge was set up next to the town hall. Some street names and the remains of the machine house of the last mine are reminiscent of this time.

In 1838 a new economic development began with the production of porcelain .

20th and 21st centuries

The proximity of the Falkenau lignite mining area in Bohemia and the favorable water conditions on the Röslau were decisive for the construction of a coal-fired power station. The Arzberg power plant was commissioned in 1915 and closed in 2003. On September 1, 2006, the two cooling towers and boiler house 7, and on December 12, 2006, boiler house 6 and the 190 m high reinforced concrete chimney were blown up.

In spring 2018 there was a flood due to heavy rain and the swelling of streams and rivers in Arzberg. Within a short period of time, the city center was completely flooded and people were not injured. Fire brigades from all over the district were involved in operations.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1977, the previously independent community of Röthenbach and parts of the dissolved community of Haid were incorporated. On April 1, 1977, parts of the dissolved community of Kothigenbibersbach , which had around 25 inhabitants at that time, were added. The communities Bergnersreuth, Schlottenhof and Seußen as well as parts of the dissolved communities Fischern and Grafenreuth followed on January 1, 1978. On January 1, 1995 a part of the dissolved area of Arzberger Forst followed .

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018, Arzberg's population fell from 6904 to 5152 by 1752 or 25.4%.

politics

City council

The city council consists of the first mayor and 20 members. These are distributed as follows ( local election 2020 ):

coat of arms

Blazon: “In silver with a border decorated with silver and red, a gold-crowned, red-armored black lion, who holds up in his paws a black kelhaue with a gold handle; a black ore mountain ascending on the right edge of the picture. "(until 1968:" In blue on a green ground, a red armored golden lion holding a black wedge hoe with a golden handle in its paws ; a black ore mountain ascending on the right edge of the shield. ")

The coat of arms reminds of the time when the city belonged to the burgrave of Nuremberg and ore mining was still flourishing. The red and silver shield border and the red armored lion are borrowed from the coat of arms of the burgraves of Nuremberg. The Erzberg and the hoe that the lion is holding symbolize the name (Arzberg is derived from Erzberg) and the flourishing mining industry from the Middle Ages to 1941.

In its present form and tincture , the coat of arms corresponds to the earliest images from around the 15th century. It was redesigned in 1965 by Emil Richter due to the changes that were made in the course of history and that led to errors in the design of the coat of arms.

Sponsored city

  • In 1961 the sponsorship for the expelled Sudeten Germans from the town of Sandau in the Marienbad district (today Dolní Žandov ) was taken over.

Twin cities

  • In 1977 a town partnership was notarized with the Austrian municipality of Arzberg in Styria .
  • In 2006 a city partnership with South Bend , Indiana, USA followed.
  • In 2008 the Czech town of Horní Slavkov (Schlaggenwald) was added as a further twin town.

Buildings and sights

Kirchberg

Arzberger Kirchberg

On the Arzberger Kirchberg there is a fortified church from the 14th / 15th centuries. Century with defensive wall, powder tower and late Baroque Protestant parish church from 1790/92, which replaced a late Gothic church that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . Church interior and pulpit altar are coordinated. The two-story galleries swing towards the pulpit altar.

From the middle of the 16th to the beginning of the 19th century, Arzberg remained closed to Catholics. A change did not come until 1810, when the area became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1875 a catholic church in neo-Gothic style was built in Arzberg, which is dedicated to Maria Immaculata. The wooden figure depicting Mary with the child dates from the 15th century.

The oldest architectural monument in the city is the powder tower with a conical roof from the late Middle Ages, a corner tower of the churchyard fortifications on the best-preserved southeast side. On the south side of the church complex is the Benckendorff crypt from 1782 with 14 marble grave slabs behind a forged iron gate and the Beckendorff-Niclot alliance coat of arms.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Iron ore mining flourished around Arzberg in earlier centuries. Alexander von Humboldt worked for five years as head miner in Arzberg and founded a mountain school there. Linen and wool weaving, gunsmithing and oven pottery were other prominent trades of the time. Products by the gunsmith Gesell and the stove potter Stöhr can still be found in large museums today.

In 1839 a new economic development began with the production of porcelain and made Arzberg the second largest porcelain town. Today only the Arzberg-Porzellan company is located with a branch. In addition to this industry, there is a gingerbread factory, a nail factory, the oldest in Bavaria, a glass melting port factory, stone construction companies, construction businesses, wood processing companies and sausage and meat products production.

The Arzberg power plant was in operation from 1915 and was shut down and dismantled in 2003. Because of the nuclear phase-out that was decided after the Fukushima disaster, replacement capacities must be created. There are currently plans to build a modern combined cycle power plant at the former power plant site.
