Röthenbach is a district of the town of Arzberg in the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains .

Geography and history

Röthenbach is located west of the Arzberger city center and borders directly on it.

In 1361 Friedrich von Schirnding bought land from the hammer smith Pesold near Röthenbach, which was the first time the place appeared in a document. At that time it was part of the Egerland and then, at the beginning of the 15th century, came into the possession of the Burgraves of Nuremberg.

The Schirndinger founded a knight's seat in Röthenbach, which included the village of Röthenbach, Bergnersreuth and individual farms in other places. On October 10, 1482 Nickl Schirndinger was from Emperor Friedrich III. The blood spell was awarded over his villages, but this led to disputes with the Margraves of Kulmbach, later Bayreuth. They ended with Johann Georg von Schirnding submitting and recognizing the sovereign authority of the margrave.

In 1698 Röthenbach consisted of 23 houses, including an inn and a sheep farm.

In 1819 the Schirndinger family died out in Röthenbach, which is why the castle fell to the von Waldenfels family in 1837 , who still own it today.

Iron ore has been mined in Röthenbach since ancient times. In 1822 there were eleven iron ore mines there, two of which remained in operation until 1864.

On January 1, 1977 was community Röthenbach disbanded and incorporated into the city Arzberg.

During the flood in spring 2018, parts of Röthenbach were also flooded, especially the center of the town, which is located in a valley.

Röthenbach Castle

Röthenbach Castle

The Röthenbach castle was in the years 1559 to 1561 for Jobst Heinrich von Schirnding built and fully restored from 1981 to 1984. The castle, which was once surrounded by a moat, has a hook-shaped floor plan. The courtyard opens to the south, the outer corner of the castle faces north. The northwest wing is shorter than the northeast wing. Both are two-story. At the corners of the upper floor facing the courtyard there is a bay window on corbels . Its stepped gables and those on the narrow sides of the castle are ingredients of the romanticism , probably soon after the middle of the 19th century. The memorial plaque erected by the workers on the Renaissance building is an art-historical rarity. The castle is owned by the von Waldenfels family.
