The Röthenbach Castle forms the historical center of the Röthenbach district belonging to the city of Arzberg .

history

According to the oldest Nothannt'schen feudal book, the lords of Schirnding had the entire village of Röthenbach as a fief as early as 1360 with the tithe of the needy on Thierstein . 1389 is the first mention of a brick seat of the Lords of Schirnding in Röthenbach. As the building inscription above the portal to the stair tower with the Schirnding- Waldenfels marriage coat of arms reveals, the Renaissance building was built between 1559 and 1561 by order of Jobst Heinrich von Schirnding and his wife Dorothea von Waldenfels. The last Schirndinger on Röthenbach, Georg Friedrich Christian, died in 1819. Through the marriage of his sister Charlotte to Ernst Freiherr von Waldenfels, Röthenbach came to the von Waldenfels family in 1827, who still lived there.

Building description

The castle, which used to be surrounded by a moat, has a hook-shaped floor plan. The two two-story castle wings each have a bay window resting on corbels at the corners of the upper floor facing the courtyard. Its stepped gables and those on the narrow sides of the castle are additions to the Romantic era and were probably added soon after the middle of the 19th century. In the corner of the two wings of the castle rises the round stair tower with the mentioned building inscription adorned with the coat of arms. The castle is privately owned by the von Waldenfels family and cannot be visited as the castle is inhabited by them.
