The list of castles and palaces in Bavaria is a directory of historical places such as castles , palaces , mansions , fortresses , moths , castle stables and fortified churches on the territory of today's Free State of Bavaria , sorted by administrative district . Ornamental and replicas that were never used as residential buildings or for defense are not listed . The order of the administrative districts of Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate, Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, Lower Franconia and Swabia corresponds to the historical development of Bavaria.
