Reconstructed headframe on the site of the former colliery

The nature park information point Kleiner Johannes is an information point of the nature park Fichtelgebirge in the Upper Franconian town of Arzberg . As a show mine , the site of the former Kleiner Johannes colliery is an exhibition site for the history of local mining .

The mining of iron ore is closely linked to the history of the city of Arzberg and had a heyday until around 1400. The ore was extracted both in open-cast mining and from various tunnels, mainly between Arzberg and Röthenbach . The Hussite Wars led to a decline in mining activities, and the Thirty Years War in particular brought mining to an end for the time being. Local entrepreneurs achieved renewed success in the late 17th century and, under Prussian administration, Alexander von Humboldt ensured its continued existence with technical and social improvements. The last mines were shut down before the First World War. The last dismantling took place between 1937 and 1941 with the operation of the Kleiner Johannes colliery.

The site of the former colliery with its buildings and remaining equipment such as the reconstructed headframe is accessible as an information point. The geological features of the region and the history of mining in the immediate vicinity are exhibited. The exhibition was developed by the mine working group of the local branch of the Fichtelgebirgsverein . It is part of the Bavaria-Bohemia Geopark . The information point is integrated into a Humboldt circular trail in town. Humboldt lived in Arzberg for several years and founded a mountain school there. A memorial plaque in Humboldtstrasse is an architectural monument .
