Melt core injection molding

The fusible core injection molding is a special method of plastic - injection molding . It is used to produce molded parts with cavities or undercuts that would not be possible with tools with moldable cores.

The process consists of three main steps. First, a core is cast from a low-melting metal that corresponds to the cavity to be formed in the intended molded part. In the second step, this is inserted into the injection mold and encapsulated with plastic. The molded part and core are removed from the mold together and, in the third step, placed in a heating bath to melt the core. The bath temperature is chosen to be slightly higher than the melting point of the core alloy so that the injection molded part is not yet damaged. By inductive heating of the core metal in the heating bath, the meltdown time is reduced to a few minutes. Liquid core metal collects at the bottom of the heating bath and can be used for new cores.

The use of the fused core process is not only limited to the injection molding of thermoplastics, but also to thermosetting molding compounds ( thermosetting plastics ) with the corresponding core alloys . The fused core process is used, for example, for injection-molded intake manifolds for car engines. By modifying the system, however, it is now also possible to manufacture small molded parts such as fittings or pump housings by producing the melt cores and the overmolded parts on an injection molding machine.
