The Ferd. Schmetz GmbH is a manufacturer of needles based in Herzogenrath, North Rhine-Westphalia . The company produces and sells industrial and household sewing machine needles at eight locations worldwide and is part of the Groz-Beckert Group .
history
In 1851 Ferdinand Schmetz founded the needle factory Schmetz in Herzogenrath near Aachen. In the first half of the 20th century, Ferdinand Bernhard Schmetz introduced standards for needle systems. Between 1965 and 1971, the company established several foreign companies for the manufacture and sale of sewing machine needles. In the course of internationalization, the SCHMETZ brand was registered worldwide. In the following years, further production and sales companies were founded. In 2011, the production company for metallic products, which is part of the group, filed for bankruptcy, the subsequently founded Schmetz Nadelproduktion GmbH concentrated on highly specialized niche products and in 2013 developed a color code with which each individual sewing machine needle is marked.
In 2018 this company announced that it would cease production at the Herzogenrath location; Only the administration and sales company should remain at the founding headquarters. According to a newspaper report, the affected company with 70 employees was the last manufacturing site for sewing needles in Germany. In 2017 the Ferd. Schmetz GmbH part of the Groz-Beckert group of companies.

The company supplies 47 sub-sectors in the sewing industry with around 3,000 different product types. Around 300 products are also offered for private sewing needs. In order to simplify the handling of the needles, the individual sewing machine needles are marked with a color marking that identifies both the needle type and the needle size.
