history

In 1864 the brothers Georg and Ludwig Schmid founded a mechanical workshop in Freudenstadt which, when their brother Wilhelm joined, developed into a metal foundry with machine assembly within ten years. The Schmid brothers produced gray cast iron parts and agricultural machines for the domestic economy. In 1910, for example, saw frames were manufactured for sawmills in the Black Forest . From 1926 Schmid specialized in the production of belt sanding machines for the up-and-coming wood and furniture industry.

Schmid used his experience with grinding machines in 1964 to enter the circuit board industry . Under the direction of Dieter C. Schmid, the range was continuously expanded and expanded to include wet processing systems. Schmid reacted to the growing export share in 1992 with the establishment of a subsidiary in the USA . Further branches in Asia followed. From 2002 the company produced wet process systems for the photovoltaic industry . In 2007 Schmid inaugurated a new technology center at the headquarters in Freudenstadt and opened another production site in Zhuhai (China) the following year . The entry into intralogistics took place in 2011 with the takeover of the Swiss montratec AG . From 2013, energy storage devices based on the vanadium redox flow battery were produced. In spring 2017, Schmid Technology Systems GmbH in Niedereschach and Montratec AG in Switzerland were spun off from the Schmid Group.
