Schmidtstedt

The former place Schmidtstedt is now a desert in the southeast of the Thuringian capital Erfurt .

Numerous names of streets and locations in the Erfurt town hall, whose name is derived from Schmidtstedt, still remind of the former village.

history

Research into the medieval desert around Erfurt began 200 years ago. In addition to the Schmidtstedt settlement, the former villages and farms of Neuses, Münstergehofen, Orfal, Hohenwind, Daberstedt , Wittenroda, Hesseborn, Mannzimmer, Ranigsdorf, Marpich, Ranstet and Sulza were added to the Erfurt town hall . Of these settlement sites , only the Sulzer settlement and Neuses have been archaeologically examined in more detail , as the majority of the desert sites are already overbuilt by the modern city.

From the interdisciplinary research on desertification in the Erfurt area, the prevailing assumption that these places had been given up after armed conflicts or as a result of epidemics could no longer be upheld. Apparently, the incentive to give up the village community and move into a place of residence in the supposedly safe walls of the nearby city was an important reason as early as the 13th century why these places were gradually abandoned by their residents.

The village of Schmidstedt was located on today's Weimarische Strasse in the area of the Gasthof Henne and probably fell into desolation before 1350. The place belonged to an area in front of the city, which is called Vogtei Büßleben . Schmidtstedt was not an insignificant place, he even had his own church, which stood until 1631 and was demolished by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War to extract building materials.

The Schmidtstedter Flur today forms the eastern part of the Daberstedt district.
