Höllberg tunnel

The Höllberg tunnel is an 874 or 849 meter long tunnel on the stretch of the Südharzautobahn A 38 Göttingen - Leipzig . It is located north of Bernterode ( Eichsfeld district ). Construction began on May 2, 2007 and the breakthrough took place on December 4, 2007. The tunnel and the motorway section between Bleicherode and Breitenworbis were opened on December 22, 2009. The construction cost around € 41 million.

The area consists of solid rock of the middle red sandstone in alternating layers of leafy-platy clay and siltstones with sandstone interlayers and platy-banky sandstones with claystone or siltstone interlayers.
