The blacksmiths and locksmiths museum in Schwalbach-Griesborn shows exhibits on the economic history of the Saarland in a listed building.

Prehistory: Coal production in Schwalbach and the surrounding area

In Schwalbach coal has been mined since at least 1730; in neighboring Griesborn there have been two shafts since 1751. In 1857 a new shaft, the so-called "Eisenbahnschacht" (later "Griesbornschacht") was created, for which from 1861 a separate siding to Ensdorf was used. The complex was named "Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm" on the occasion of a visit by the Crown Prince. From 1833 civil engineering and steam engines were used. After the gradual decline of the conveyor system in Griesborn, it was closed in 1950. Parts of the structures were demolished; another part continued to be used as a factory school for the Saarbergwerke and in 1969 became the property of the Saarlouis district.

Museum use of the old systems

The district built the school at the railway shaft at this location, which operates a flax museum in the former transformer building .

The compressor house , which served its original purpose for around 100 years, was declared a document of industrial architecture and thus a monument as the last unaltered building in the mine. At the suggestion of the state metal guild, it was continued to be used as a forge and locksmith museum. A cooperation agreement has existed between the state metal guild and the Saarlouis district since 1993. The building was - partly as part of job creation measures - restored, expanded and equipped with exhibits on everyday commercial and industrial culture. These include machines, transmissions, devices, tools and workpieces.

Exhibits

The other metal professions later emerged from the blacksmith's trade. The museum, which opened in 1999, shows hand-operated machines and tools from the 18th and 19th centuries, including bellows , anvil , bending horn and upsetting machine . Another department is dedicated to fusion welding and the plumbing and sheet metal trade. Under the gallery in the entrance hall there are mainly machines from the period from 1880 to the 1920s, which were used by locksmiths and machine builders, whereas machines and tools from all ironworking trades are on display on the upper floor of the house. Numerous photographs provide information about the history of the former coal mine. A compressed air compressor, a deep-drawing press , various iron gate presses, forging hammers, lathes and agricultural equipment can be seen in the outdoor area .
