Schmirchau was a district of the city of Ronneburg in what is now the district of Greiz in Thuringia . It fell to waste due to the uranium mining of the SDAG Wismut .

history

The village Schmirchau was first mentioned in a document on March 18, 1237 . The district was a 20-minute walk from the city. A small stream flowed through the district . In 1948, 365 residents lived in 38 houses in the agricultural village. The incorporation to Ronneburg became effective on July 1, 1950.

The exploration work

  • They began in 1950. The starting point was the village of Schmirchau.
  • In 1951 the manhole administration was formed in the village. Two farmsteads and the inn were needed for this. Owners and local residents should sell their land voluntarily, if not, the force of law has bent them. The prices were minimal.
  • In 1954 there were further resettlements and the cemetery was transferred to Ronneburg. After that, the place was completely evacuated.
  • Discovery of ore deposits near the surface and exposure of the open pit. Europe's deepest open-cast mine at 240 meters is being built at the former Schmirchau site. Mining took place underground for another 20 years.
  • The so-called Schmirchauer Höhe was created with the spoil .

Contemporary witness

The memorial stone with a plaque at the former center of the village is a contemporary witness .
