features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 40 to 48 millimeters. The color of the forewings varies from olive brown to reddish brown tones. Ring, kidney and cone blemishes are filled with black rings or dots, large areas of which are colored white and thus stand out clearly. Cross lines and wavy lines are black and slightly whitish. The fringes are alternately brown and white piebald. The hind wings shimmer silky white, with the veins tapering towards the anal angle mostly with a few small black dots. In the females, the hem area is somewhat darkened. The proboscis is well developed.

Egg, caterpillar and pupa

The egg is cone-shaped with a flat tip and distinct longitudinal ribs. It is white in color with a black-brown band or black spots.

Adult caterpillars are whitish, brownish or greenish in color. Dark slashes and hook-shaped drawing elements can be seen on the sides. The topline stands out brightly.

The yellow-brown pupa is characterized by short, curved bristles on the upper edge of the spatula-shaped kremaster .

Similar species

In the overall appearance of the slightly darker colored forest grass owl ( Crypsedra gemmea ), the cone blemishes are darker and the hind wings are gray-brown. The white-spotted carnation owl ( Hadena albimacula ) is significantly smaller with a wingspan of 28 to 37 millimeters and also shows gray-brown hind wings.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The nominate form of the owl is sparsely distributed from the Pyrenees to the east to the Ukraine . In Turkey the following four sub-species are:

  • Lamprosticta culta culta (nominate form) in coastal areas of the Aegean Sea and some regions of western Anatolia
  • Lamprosticta culta plumbitincta in the provinces of Erzurum and Erzincan
  • Lamprosticta culta coeruleuca in the Bitlis province
  • Lamprosticta culta albescens in western regions of the Taurus Mountains

The species prefers to colonize warm slopes, bushy forest edges, sloe hedges, orchards and orchards.

Way of life

The nocturnal ornamental owl forms one generation per year, the moths of which fly in June and July. They suckle on flowers, visit baits and artificial light sources , mostly the males. The caterpillars live from August to September. They feed on the leaves of various trees and bushes, for example blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ) as well as hawthorn ( Crataegus ) and fruit tree species . They prefer trees with a thick layer of lichen or moss. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The jeweled owl has disappeared in most of the German federal states and is listed in category 1 (threatened with extinction) on the red list of endangered species .
