Pouring rain

Precipitation and temperature in the city of Salzburg

Schnürlregen or Salzburg Schnürlregen refers to a specific form of spray or drizzle that occurs frequently in the Salzkammergut in particular - due to the northern stagnation - and usually lasts longer. The city of Salzburg has comparatively high amounts of precipitation compared to the flatlands and overall. They are almost twice as high as in the federal capital Vienna . The number of days with precipitation is also comparatively high at 141.2. Due to the damming effect of the northern Limestone Alps in the south of the city, higher amounts of precipitation are recorded there than in the north-west bordering Alpine foothills , but also than in a large part of the inner-Alpine areas of the State of Salzburg.

The string of rain is so called because of the apparently not tearing off relatively thin drops, which is expressed in High German with the expression "it rains twine". This type of rain poses a problem, especially for the open-air performances of the Salzburg Festival and other summer performances in the northern Alps, so that either rainproof roll-up roofs must be installed or alternative accommodation must be provided for all performance locations . In the case of the traditional Jedermann performances on Domplatz, this has been the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg since 1960 . The Felsenreitschule and the Residenzhof - as additional venues for the Salzburg Festival - were made rainproof with a roll-up roof.
