Schnapps nose

Schnapsnase even Säufer- or drinkers nose , is a name from the slang for:

  • a " bulbous, bluish-red nose that is thickened due to excessive alcohol consumption " or "a nose that is red from drinking too much alcohol".
  • People who drink alcohol regularly or more often.

However, a schnapps nose is not a sure sign that the person who carries it is a regular alcohol user. The puffy bulbous nose with red and blue veins is called rhinophyma . The rhinophyma is a form of rosacea, a hereditary chronic skin inflammation. Two to five percent of the adult population suffer from it. In some people, more often in men of advanced age, the sebum glands in the nose can thicken like knots, the tissue grows like cauliflower. However, in addition to intense exposure to the sun, hot spices, hot beverages and severe stress, alcohol consumption is one of the stimuli that intensify the disease. Nevertheless, alcohol is by no means the trigger. Even teetotalers can therefore be attacked by the schnapps nose .
