A snowball is a spherical structure made of snow that is pressed together with the hands or rolled over snowy terrain, whereby it becomes larger and larger as new snow adheres. This works best with wet snow (also known as "cardboard snow") because it looks sticky . On the other hand, it is almost impossible to form a snowball or roll a ball (or roller ) out of powder snow . In addition, a snowman can be built from larger snow balls .

Snowballs are mainly used to throw them at each other. Snowball fights are especially popular among children. From 2007 to 2010 there was a snowball fight world championship in Winterberg . After a four-year break, it has been held in Gelsenkirchen's Veltins-Arena since 2014 as part of the framework program for the World Team Challenge .

Under the name Yukigassen there is a competitive sport originating in Japan that is based on snowball fights . In the small town of Severance , Colorado , throwing snowballs was banned for nearly a hundred years.
