Cutting oil
Cutting oil is a non-water-miscible cooling lubricant to improve machining processes. The oil reduces friction, cools the tool and workpiece and prevents corrosion. If there is a continuous flow of cutting oil, it also removes the chips from the machining point. The viscosity of the cutting oils is usually in the range between 5 and 50 mm² / s at 40 ° C. Thin liquids, d. H. Low-viscosity cutting oils are preferred for honing and grinding . Medium-liquid (medium-viscosity) oils are used in drilling , turning , milling and reaming . For more difficult machining, thick (high viscosity) cutting oils are used.
The lower friction results in a lower cutting force and wear, which has a positive effect on the surface quality , the dimensional accuracy and the service life of the tool. Cutting oils are usually mixed with a number of additives that give the oil a high level of pressure stability or enable it to adhere better to surfaces.
Cutting oils are only used when the lubricating effect is more important than the cooling effect. In the case of very fast machining processes, the focus is on cooling. Water- mixed cooling lubricants or cooling lubricants are preferably used here.
In addition to cutting oils, the non-water-miscible cooling lubricants also include machining oils for forming such as B. deep drawing , rolling , cold extrusion, etc.
Traditionally, "fat rapeseed oil " has been used as a universal drilling and cutting oil with good results.
