The high-speed line Zaragoza – Huesca is a Spanish railway - high-speed line . It branches off the Madrid – Barcelona high-speed line in Saragossa and heads northeast via Tardienta to Huesca . On the portion between Zaragoza and Tardienta was used as new line a control track track parallel to the existing and with 3 kV DC electrified broad gauge track built with 25 kV / 50 Hz AC electrified . The construction work was carried out in two sections, each 31.2 km and 27.5 km in length. The power supply comes from a substation that was built at route kilometers 46.6.

The 20.7 km long section north of Tardienta is unique in the European high-speed network, on which a three- rail track for broad and standard gauge was laid and electrified with 25 kV. In the current state, the contact wire can only be used by standard gauge vehicles, while only diesel traction is possible on broad gauge. The connection from the broad-gauge network to the three-rail track and the broad-gauge tracks in Huesca station are not spanned. This section is part of the Saragossa – Canfranc railway line . Huesca train station was also rebuilt. Two platform tracks are regular-gauge with the possibility of repositioning, four butt tracks, only one of which is on the edge of the platform, are wide-gauge. The platforms were extended to 220 meters. A lane change system was also built in Huesca to make the rest of the route to Canfranc accessible for lane change vehicles.

Although officially called the high-speed line, the maximum speed between Zaragoza and Tardienta is only 200 km / h on standard gauge and 160 km / h on broad gauge, and between Tardienta and Huesca at 160 km / h. Accordingly, the line is equipped with conventional punctual train control of the Spanish ASFA system. The new construction and expansion of the line cost around 250 million euros.

On December 23, 2003, the high-speed service between Saragossa and Huesca was started with an inaugural run with a Renfe class 100 multiple unit . Travel times were reduced between Huesca and Madrid from 278 to 130 minutes and between Huesca and Saragossa from 70 to 35 minutes. In addition, express trains of the Media Distancia brand run on the route, which travel with RENFE series 594 diesel multiple units that can change lanes via Huesca to Jaca . The long-distance fare between Saragossa and Huesca was initially 19 euros; in regional traffic on the existing route, however, 4.35 to 5.40 euros were charged.

In September 2010, the Spanish Ministry of Infrastructure Promotion ( Ministerio de Fomento ) awarded an order for a feasibility study to convert the three-rail section between Tardienta and Huesca into separate standard and broad gauge tracks in order to increase the line capacity.

The Huesca terminus was used by an average of 110 passengers per day in 2017, and the Tardienta intermediate station by just one and a half people per day. The route is therefore one of the least used in all of Spain
