features

They are narrow, elongated fish with a sharp, knife-like belly keel formed from bone plates, which, with their characteristic swimming style - head down - go foraging between seagrass fields or between gorgonians . For protection, the fish often stay between the long spines of diadem sea urchins ( Diadem sp. ). All species are toothless and have a tubular pipette nozzle to suck in food. The dorsal fin is turned towards the rear end.
