The subfamily of the snipe knife fish (Centriscinae) belongs to the snipe fish (Centriscidae) within the order of the pipefish (Syngnathiformes). It consists of two genera with two species each . The animals live in the tropical Indo-Pacific . They are also called razor fish in German .
features
They are narrow, elongated fish with a sharp, knife-like belly keel formed from bone plates, which, with their characteristic swimming style - head down - go foraging between seagrass fields or between gorgonians . For protection, the fish often stay between the long spines of diadem sea urchins ( Diadem sp. ). All species are toothless and have a tubular pipette nozzle to suck in food. The dorsal fin is turned towards the rear end.
Systematics
There are two genera with two species each. The genera differ in the construction of the first dorsal fin ray . In Centriscus it is rigid, while in Aeoliscus it has a joint in the middle and can be kinked.
