Snipe stroke

Ferdinand von Raesfeld on the snipe stroke by Ernst-Hugo von Stenglin

The snipe is in the hunter language of courtship flight of the woodcock in March / April. The roosters pursue the females with vocalizations. In the breeding area at dusk, the roosters, which are mostly shouting around in certain channels, are attracted by the soft beeping of the female sitting on the ground.

The snipe stroke was a way of hunting snipe. The hunter waited in " decency ", that is, standing or sitting in good cover, for the approaching birds. The hunters tried to kill only the males that were not needed to raise the young. If there were several snipe (= approaching) snipe, the snipe that was flying in front was never shot because it is always the female. Another identification mark of the males is the courtship call, the female bird flies silently. Therefore, the selection of the males at courtship time was safer than it is today after the change in hunting times.

The woodcock was put on the red list for warning in 2002 due to the negative population development, so that many hunters refrain from shooting this threatened species.

Associated with the snipe stroke for more than 170 years is a popular poem in which the Sundays of Lent are associated with the frequency with which courtship flights occur:

" Invocavit - take the dog with you,
Reminiscere - clean the guns,
Oculi - here they come,
Laetare - that's the real thing,
Judica - they are still there,
Palmarum - Lirum, Larum,
Easter time - a few booty,
Quasimodogeniti - rooster in Rest, now they brood. "

"Schnepfenstrich" (1960), bronze sculpture by the animal sculptor Vera Lwowski

Because of the astronomical range of variation of the days associated with Easter, the occurrence was not always in accordance with the poem.

Today, in most federal states in Germany, it is only possible to bush or rummage around with the dog in autumn. Male and female birds cannot be distinguished. In Germany the woodcock is the only huntable snipe, all other snipes are protected. The trophy is the pair of hand feathers in front of the first feather, known as the " painter's pen ". In addition to the whole animal, which is prepared in a similar way to other poultry of this size, the innards (excluding the stomach) have found their way into the kitchen as snipe droppings.
