Carving blank

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A carving blank , also known as a milling cutter , is a machine pre-milled, wooden raw form (wooden blank ), which is later turned into a carved figure by hand .

All contours of the motif have already been worked out with a milling machine for the carving blank . Due to these pre-milled shapes, only surface processing is necessary for the subsequent carving. However, these rough figures have to be completely re-carved so that details, such as eyes, are recognizable, and are then usually painted in color .

Carving a carving blank is a great relief for the industrial and large-scale commercial sector, because rapid series production is possible with guaranteed constant assortments ( individualized mass production ). In the Ore Mountains toy production, this form of production (tire turning) goes back to the 18th century, it is still widespread in the traditional hand carving centers in South Tyrol for the devotional , souvenir and export market. Here, such carvings represent an important factor in home work as extra income for the peasant population.

Carving blanks are also interesting for hobby carvers, they have the advantage that no great knowledge of materials and no artistic skills are required to achieve attractive results. Today they are offered in a variety of craft supplies.
