The object School in 1888 originally known as "Juliana School", is a listed building and renovated in Oranjestad ( Aruba ).

history

The building was the first public elementary school in Aruba. It was designed by Antoine Martis (1837-1894), head of the Curacao building department , in the late classicist style and built between 1887 and 1888. The opening was on March 5, 1888. The toilet facilities and the fenced and roofed school yard were built around 1900 by Johannes Scheurman. The south wing was built between 1920 and 1922. The school was renamed the "Prinses Margriet School" on December 16, 1921 by government regulation.

During the Second World War , accommodation and facilities for the military were built next to the building, and the entire complex served as quarters for the national disaster control in Oranjestad .

At the end of 1953 to mid-1955, the old building was thoroughly restored and reconstructed to accommodate the public library. The south wing was provided with a gable roof, the central part between the north and south wing with a hipped roof. The former water tanks were partially drained and used as cellars and storage rooms. A central portico, similar in style and design to the north entrance, was built in front of the south facade in 1982. From that moment on, the building had two main entrances. At the beginning of 2000 the interior of the building was almost completely adapted and the main entrance to the portico was glazed. The north and south wings correspond to the original design. In 2004 the complex was remodeled and is now the seat of the Aruba Chamber of Accounts .
