School games

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schoolgames are a Freyspiel GmbH project that aims to bring more relevance and practice into everyday school life. Learning games (board games) and teaching materials are developed together with companies and teachers are provided for their lessons. With around 2,800 participating schools, 5,400 teachers and over 450,000 students in Austria and Germany, the school games are, according to the company, one of the largest school projects (as of January 2019). School tournaments take place regularly at the state and federal level.

history

Freyspiel GmbH (then Freyspiel Communication Games) was founded by Jakob and Sonja Frey in 1998 as a family business and specialized in the development, design and production of games as a means of communication for companies. The idea of the “Wirtschafts DKT ”, which became one of the best-selling games in Austria, was particularly successful . This was originally developed as a give-away to promote Graz as a business location. The classic DKT fields were filled with companies from Graz. DKTs for other federal states followed, and finally the Austria version of the game.

From the success of the game, the management developed the desire to promote economic thinking in schools as well. The business DKT was made available to schools and in 2005 the first “Austrian Business Schoolgames” took place. The best three teams from each federal state played for the title for the first time this year.

From this point on, the Business DKT developed into the first Business Master and the “Schoolgames” project, with the focus on practical and playful transfer of knowledge in school lessons.

A few years later the activity was expanded to Slovakia (2009) and Germany (2010). While the Slovak version was discontinued in 2011, the German market could be maintained. The board game has meanwhile been expanded to include additional materials (teaching material, job profiles, information on company partners).

With 2,800 partner schools in Austria and Germany, the school games are one of the largest school projects in the German-speaking area (as of 2019).

Board games

Board games should enable students to playfully repeat the subject matter and at the same time get to know real companies. Both should prepare for entry into professional life after school.

The game is a mixture of Monopoly (Austria: DKT ) and Trivial Pursuit . Instead of roads, real companies can be acquired; instead of building a house or a hotel, the company is developed and ultimately becomes an AG. Before each of these actions, however, a question from the curriculum must be answered - the player may only invest if the answer is correct. If you come to an opposing field you pay an order to the player who owns the company. In addition to the classic playing fields, as with Monopoly, there are action and bench fields for special game activities.

The games are available for schools free of charge.

Business master

The Business Master has been available since 2005 and contains questions about geography and economics lessons that are asked using company examples. The game is suitable for the 5th to 9th grade (junior version) as well as for the 9th to 12th grade (senior version) and can be played in German and English. The contents are based on the learning objective catalog of the EBC * L , the "European Business Driving License ". The Business Master thus conveys an EU- wide recognized business competence standard and is also compatible with all federal state curricula.

Mintmaster

The Mintmaster was first launched in 2015. It deals specifically with the MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) and is only available in German.

Federal and state finals

Once a year regional finals and in Germany and Austria a national federal finals are held, where the best school teams meet. The federal final is traditionally held by one of the schoolgames partner companies.

Teaching material

For use in school lessons, Schoolgames also produces teaching materials on topics from the curriculum in collaboration with school book publishers and pedagogically trained authors. Each topic is explained using the example of a company and specifically prepared for teaching. Many materials are also suitable for interdisciplinary teaching: for example, the jump parabola is calculated on the Stratos jump by Felix Baumgartner in computer science classes, heat friction is explained in physics and the effects on the body are discussed in psychology.

In the documents, teachers will find a proposal for the design of the lesson units, information sheets and worksheets as well as job profiles for thematically appropriate professions.

Recently published materials explain the supply chain based on the tomato path from harvest to shelf or digitalization using the example of Siemens Germany.

Job profiles

Schoolgames provides teachers with job profiles for various subjects so that they can incorporate professional orientation directly into lessons . People tell about their job and explain which school subjects are particularly important for this position.
