Schopfreher ( Ardeola ) are a genus of birds from the heron family . They are medium-sized herons with a height between forty and fifty and a wingspan of 80 to 100 centimeters. Schopfreher occur exclusively in the Old World . The black heron has one of the largest distribution areas , it includes southern Europe and parts of Asia as well as large parts of Africa.
Appearance
Most of the pelvic tufts are sturdy. They have a relatively short neck, a short, powerful bill and are often yellow-brown to brownish. The rare thick-billed heron, which wears a pure white breeding dress, is an exception . However, it shows the plumage coloring characteristic of Schopfreher when it is resting. Many of the species have stripes on the fore neck or neck. Most species have elongated feathers on the neck and back of the head during the breeding season. In flight, many species appear predominantly white because, apart from the red-bellied heron, they have white wings.
Habitat and behavior
The habitat of the Schopfreiher are wetlands. They nest in colonies and are often associated with other species. Before the sharp decline in populations, the great-billed heron often brooded in colonies that comprised more than 700 breeding pairs. The nests are built in shrubs or trees. The clutches usually contain between two and four eggs. The diet consists of insects, fish and amphibians. They often stay in smaller wetlands. Some species like the red-bellied heron also benefit from the creation of rice fields. In the case of the big-billed heron, on the other hand, increased rice cultivation is one of the reasons for its sharp decline in populations.
