In 1861, in the Revue Germanique Internationale, he was one of the first to demonstrate the great importance of Charles Darwin's theories . In the same year he was awarded the Grand Prize in Physics from the Paris Academy of Sciences . He researched the structure of the infusoria ( infusion animals ), the anatomy of annelids , the histology of the earthworm, the organization of the molluscs , the embryology of the arthropods and the evolution of the spiders.
