The screw band is a special book cover in which the pages are held between the book covers by screws .

A screw band consists of the two covers which, as usual, are connected to the back with a fold, but there is still a relatively wide strip between the fold and the actual back that forms part of the back. In this area, the eponymous book screws are passed through corresponding holes and secured on the opposite side with a nut, usually a sleeve nut .

By loosening these screws, the pages that are cut sheets can easily be removed, replaced, or rearranged in a different order. The connection through the screws is very stable and can not be opened without tools (unlike with a file folder or clamp binder ). In addition, the pages can be quite thick and z. B. also consist of cardboard , which could not be processed in the classic stitching with layers. A disadvantage, however, is a low flexibility in thickness due to the length of the screws: When several pages are removed, the screws protrude from the covers and the stability of the entire tape is reduced. This can be avoided by inserting blank pages or at least perforated cardboard strips in the area of the back.

In the past, screw straps were e.g. B. in museums for storing graphics in passe- partouts, as these can be easily opened by opening the screws, e.g. B. for exhibition purposes or closer inspection could be taken. They were also used as a photo album or album for records .

Today screw-on bindings are mainly used for menus , less often for luxury bibliophile editions. In addition, they are used when materials other than paper or cardboard are bound in a cover - for example, fabric or leather samples for upholstered furniture are often summarized by the manufacturer in screw bindings and can thus easily be presented to the customer for selection or made available on loan.
