Schraumen or Schraumeln is a card game by the Swiss game inventor Urs Hostettler . It was shortlisted for Game of the Year in 1992 .

The word "Schraumen" is a word created from Schr iftrollen and plowing aumen . The publisher FX Schmid sold the game under the name "Schraumeln". He suspected that a verb was more promising as a name than a word that was not so easy to classify.

The game is about Schraumenland . The inhabitants are called Schraumen (singular: Schraum ), they grow plums and also measure their wealth in the number of plums that an individual possesses. The highest schraum is the druid . He may legislate and auction scrolls. Which Schraum has the most plums at the end is chosen as the upper Schraum.

Game material

The game material consists of 77 cards ( scrolls ), 100 coins ( plums ) and a game board with a built-in cup ( garden ) for the plums and a marked fireplace for storing the selected scrolls.

Game flow

Before the start of the game, the cards are shuffled; eleven cards are set aside and three are given to each player. Each player also receives seven plums, which he must lay down in front of him so that everyone can see them. The number of plums per player must be transparent at all times.

It is played in turn. Each player takes on the role of a druid once . The druid makes laws, i. H. the player may read any number of his scrolls, but may not hold more than five cards in his hand at the end of the reading. As soon as the card has been read, it is burned in the fireplace. Every card contains a law that becomes valid after it has been read. This can e.g. B. be that the player with the largest plum treasure has to give the neighbor a scroll or that the druid can pick up six plums etc.

At the end of the reading, the druid takes the first card from the stack and looks at it for himself. He is not allowed to reveal the contents of the card. Then this card will be auctioned. Only players who do not already have five or more cards are allowed to bid. The druid can also bid. If another player bids the most, payment goes to the druid. If the druid offers the most, he puts the plums back in the garden . If no player wants to bid for the card, the druid will get it for free.

The game ends when either no more cards can be auctioned or when a card determines the condition on which the game ends. The winner is the player who has the most plums in the end.
