Typing office

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A typing office is an independent company or a company department whose mostly exclusive task is to transcribe dictations . Due to the increasing spread of computer-aided technologies for speech recognition , the post-correction of so-called speech recognition raw texts has recently been added to the area of responsibility of typing offices. Contrary to the claims of many providers, the automatic speech recognition still does not work precisely enough that a post-correction could be dispensed with. This is especially true for more complex dictations, such as B. arise in the medical field. Checks are mandatory here before a text can be used. A common software bug is e.g. B. the incorrect recognition of the words "a" or "no" - an important difference in medical and legal documents.

The post-processing and control is usually done by the dictator himself or in the typing office by a specialist who specializes in such post-corrections ("speech recognition editor"). Coming from the USA, more and more typing offices in Europe are also specializing in this service.

Recently, more and more internal and external typing offices have been offering additional services related to transcription, such as digital dictation by telephone or digital signature processes .

Economical meaning

The value of the writing services provided annually in Germany is estimated at 10 to 15 billion euros. The largest share is accounted for by permanent employees in the company.

The increasing spread of digital dictation technology has made it possible to send dictations quickly and cheaply to anywhere in the world, so that typing services are increasingly being outsourced to external typing service providers. SSL encryption technology and VPN tunnels also enable so-called multiple dictators, doctors and lawyers to legally and securely use external typing services.

In the USA, over 60% of all medical dictations are already being written by external typing agencies, the world's largest typing agency, CBaySystems, employs 12,500 people (7,500 at the US subsidiary MedQuist Inc. and 5,000 in India). According to the company, the market leader in Europe is AlsterText GmbH & Co. KG , based in Hamburg , which, according to its own information, is also Europe's largest employer for home office typists.

Despite some very large companies in both the US and Europe, the writing services market is very fragmented, as there are thousands of one-man businesses called "Mom & Pop Companies" looking for a home office -Activity based on unemployment or parental leave.

Typing in the medical and legal fields

By far the largest volume of dictations is produced in medicine . Practically every operation and every finding must be documented in writing in the patient file. In the case of discharges or referrals, a detailed doctor's letter ( epicrisis ) is usually sent to the doctor providing further treatment. Although the reports are dictated by the doctor, they are usually written by a (cheaper) typist for reasons of time and costs. Electronic speech recognition is also often used to increase efficiency and reduce costs .

The second largest share of dictation volume is generated in the legal sector.

In Germany, around 400,000 medical professionals (especially doctors employed in hospitals) and 60,000 lawyers dictate around 90% of all dictations.
