from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Writings of the Archives of the University of Vienna is the name of a scientific series of books that deal with the history of the University of Vienna and, for the most part, are closely related to the holdings of the Archives of the University of Vienna .

Reason and name

This series was started in 1985 by Günther Hamann , the pioneer of the history of science in Austria, by Kurt Mühlberger , the then director of the university archive, and Franz Skacel, then director of the university and very interested in its history. The original name was the series of publications of the University Archives, University of Vienna ; From Volume 14 the name was shortened by omitting the "-reihe" and omitting the double mention of "University".

Editor and publisher

The current editors are Kurt Mühlberger , Thomas Maisel and Johannes Seidl . The publisher is now the Vienna University Press at V&R unipress ( Göttingen ). The original publisher was WUV-Universitätsverlag (Vienna).

Contents of the volumes

The history of the University of Vienna is selectively deepened in the individual volumes: It is about the history of individual faculties : the (Catholic) theological (vol. 1), the evangelical theological (vol. 10) or the medical faculty (vol . 19) and the Faculty of Law and Political Science (Vol. 20). The early days of the University of Vienna were the specialty of the historian Paul Uiblein (Vol. 4 and 11). A separate volume is devoted to women's studies , which were only made possible at a late stage (vol. 5). Individual university teachers are also treated in monographs: the astronomer Georg Tannstetter (vol. 8) and the geologist Eduard Suess (vol. 14).

The latest volume (vol. 21) deals with scientific research in Austria between 1800 and 1900.
