Scrap press

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A scrap press is a mostly hydraulically operated device that is used to compact metal scrap . The advantage is the significant volume reduction, which offers logistical but also economic advantages during transport. In addition to loose metal scrap, disused cars (which have already been freed from all plastics , etc.) are compacted using a press with high force of up to 20 MN .

Pressed scrap blocks

Compact cubes of scrap made from unsorted mixed scrap are often problematic in further processing, since, in case of doubt, non-ferrous metals (e.g. copper) are difficult to separate from scrap iron. This can lead to a considerable loss of quality of the steel when it is remelted. For this reason, scrap vehicles are now preferably only compacted horizontally.

The pretreated vehicle wrecks are then fractionated using a shredder system in order to enable the fractions to be processed according to type.

The world's largest scrap press is located in Eltersdorf , Erlangen, where up to 1000 tons of metal scrap are pressed into more compact blocks every day . The entire facility is open to viewing on Sundays and public holidays.
