Shuʿaitat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shuʿaitat ( Arabic الشعيطات, DMG aš-Šu'ayṭāt ) are in the east of Syria in the province of Deir ez-Zor siedelnder Arab tribe (عشيرة, DMG ʿasīra ). The Shuʿaitat are Sunni Muslims .

The name is also often written Schaitat , English Shaitat , more rarely Shaytat or similar. The vowel between sch and the sound ʿAin is not spoken in dialectal Arabic , so that when the ʿAin is omitted in the transcription, the aforementioned spelling is created.

Due to the resistance of the fighters of the tribe after the advance of the Islamic State in 2014, the Shuʿaitat tribe also gained attention in the western media. For a while it was able to protect several villages from being conquered by the Islamic State, but in August 2014 it was no longer able to withstand the overwhelming power of the Islamic State.

After conquering the tribal area, the Shu Schaitat was massacred, in which the Islamic State killed around 700 people, mostly adult men, and thus almost wiped out the tribe. In December 2014, a mass grave with about 230 other dead was discovered.
