The 26-year-old man was shot dead by the Iranian police in Mahabad on July 9, 2005 while attempting to arrest him while trying to escape. He had been an important organizer of demonstrations against the Iranian government in the run-up to the 2005 presidential elections in Iran . According to a report from the US government , Iranian soldiers allegedly took his body to a military vehicle and then dragged him through the city. According to the US government, this was done with the intention of intimidating the population and deterring future protests. He had been accused of demanding Kurdistan independence and celebrating the appointment of Kurdish Jalal Talabani as President of Iraq. Following his death, there were violent protests from July to August in Mahabad and other cities in the Kurdish areas. Thousands of people gathered on Chuar-chira Square . Several people died in these demonstrations. The Iranian government sent 100,000 soldiers to the region to quell the unrest.
