School on the Pulverberg

The school building at Pulverberg , Schleswiger Strasse 10 / Theodorstrasse, in Bremen , Walle district, Osterfeuerberg district , was built in 1911 according to plans by building director Wilhelm Knop and Karl August Oehring. This school has been a listed building in Bremen since 1984 .

The school was named after its location, the powder mountain in Walle, on which a powder magazine stood in the 19th century until 1879.

history

Between 1892 and 1916, 25 new schools were built in Bremen, some of which - strictly separated - accepted girls. In the west of Bremen, the population doubled at the beginning of the 20th century. Several new schools were built.

This three-storey elementary school from 1911 was planned and realized in the style of the turn of the century by the Building Inspectorate Bremen (later Building Department Bremen ). The building with a U-shaped floor plan, a basement and a hipped roof has a red brick facade with horizontal stone structure.

In 1911 the school had 18 classes and in 1913 20 classes with almost 900 students. In 1911 there were already English courses at the school. In 1919 it became a district school. The number of classes and students decreased. During the Second World War, units of the naval flak were temporarily stationed in the building and the pupils attended the school on Schleswiger Strasse or were sent to the children's area .
