The Schule am Sandsteinweg (SamS) is a state primary school in the Buckow district of Berlin's Neukölln district that functions as an open all-day school . It was opened on October 7, 1957 under the name "Christoph-Ruden-Schule". The SamS visited 767 students in the 2019/2020 school year. 49 teachers were employed at the school in the same year, supported by 25 educators. The proportion of students with a migration background was 34% in 2019/2020 and was thus below average for the Neukölln district. It is the largest primary school in the Neukölln district.

history

After its opening in 1957, the SamS was called "Christoph-Ruden-Schule" until April 15, 1967. The old Buckow village school was attached to it as a branch. Since 1967 it has been officially designated as the primary school on Sandsteinweg, often with the administrative number 30.G (30th primary school). Due to the increasing number of pupils, another school building was built in 1968 (House 2). In 1972 a second sports hall (gymnastics hall) followed, in autumn 1995 two more school buildings (house 3 and house 4) were built. The school buildings are two-storey functional buildings.

In 1975 the first school projects with animals began. Fish, toads and newts were bred in five aquariums and looked after by students. The plant was continuously expanded in the following years.

In 1989, the headmistress Balzer developed her concept "School as living space", in 1990 a chicken pen and a rabbit hutch were built. They formed the basis of the school zoo . As early as 1992, donkeys, goats, sheep, ducks, pigeons and ponies lived on the school grounds. The first reports from TV stations and the Berliner Zeitung, RBB, Berliner Abendblatt followed. In the following years the school zoo was continuously expanded and rebuilt. The school's friends' association is heavily involved in this and bears the running costs for the upkeep of the animals. The SamS Association is supported by volunteers from the ranks of the parents and MAE staff. In October 2007 the SamS celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The school today

The SamS gained nationwide media attention through the “Animal Farm” project, which was founded in 1990 and was introduced as a project to prevent violence and combat vandalism. Eltern (2004), Familie & Co (2005), 3Sat (2004), and Vox (2005) reported on the school. Over 100 animals live on the 40,000 m² school grounds. In addition to goats, sheep, rabbits, pot-bellied pigs, pigeons and colonies of bees, there are five horses and the in-house riding lessons that distinguish the SamS from other schools. Pupils can take exams for riding badges on the school's own riding arena .

Another specialty of the SamS is the school circus "Sandolino". The students present the artistic skills acquired in several circus working groups at "jugglers' festivals" in the circus tent that is also part of the school. The SamS actively participates in public life in the Buckow district. The school presents itself with its own stand at the Christmas market, helps design the stage program and maintains close contact with several retirement homes.

Others

The costs of maintaining the school zoo are borne by the sponsoring association. The support of the school by parents and sponsors has a long tradition at the SamS. In 1960 the "Association of Patrons of the Christoph-Ruden-Schule" was founded. After several renaming and the conversion to a registered association, it has been recognized by the tax office as non-profit since 1995. Renate Fabian has been chairwoman of the association since 1991. In 2009 she was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her "long-term, selfless commitment". In 2007 she received the Neukölln Badge of Honor, the district's highest award to citizens. Since 2012, the Förderverein has been organizing an annual charity literature festival in autumn, at which well-known best-selling authors such as Sebastian Fitzek and Ms. Freitag appear.
