The school in Bergmannsfeld is an urban community elementary school in the Freisenbruch district of Essen and is the only school in Essen to offer denominational, cooperative religious instruction.

history

In 1969 the school was opened for around 560 children in 16 school classes. After families with children moved into the neighboring new housing estate Bergmannsfeld , an extension was added in 1973, so that 905 students were spread over 25 classes. This number has not been reached again since then. In 2009, on the 40th anniversary of the school, it escaped a closure planned by the city administration thanks to broad support from the school environment. Between 2011 and 2013, around one million euros was invested in the school renovation.

School life and peculiarities

Today there are around 270 pupils in the school, who are looked after by 19 teachers, two of whom are special education teachers and 12 are educators. For the open all-day school (OGS), another fee-based employee is responsible for catering. There are 11 classes in the school, from the first to the fourth grade. The school consists of three buildings and a gym.

The school in Bergmannsfeld is the only school in Essen that officially offers "cooperative religious instruction" or " confessional-cooperative religious instruction ".

In addition, chess is taught as a school subject , for which the teacher and chess grandmaster Sebastian Siebrecht was awarded the prize as chess teacher of the year .

Pedagogical focus

The school sets its pedagogical focus in the following areas: social learning , dealing with cultural diversity , promoting the willingness to learn and perform , violence prevention , language promotion , reading promotion , physical activity promotion , traffic education , parenting work and parenting advice as well as reading and spelling promotion in cases of reading and spelling disorders (LRS).

Projects and events

The following projects and events take place regularly in everyday school life: class and school celebrations, working groups, weekly church services, Advent singing, play and sports festivals, participation in sports competitions, class trips, day trips, joint schooling celebrations and a joint farewell to the fourth year of school.
