School portraits

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

School portraits (also spelled school portraits ) are an attempt to present high quality and standardized information about schools. To that extent they are part of ministerial education reporting. School portraits provide selected statistical data and information prepared by schools themselves on the Internet as a website based on binding characteristics .

They are aimed at parents, teachers, students, partners in local schools as well as at home and abroad and the general public. In the federal states that operate school portraits, schools have been instructed by the relevant ministries to process their school portraits.

These binding school portraits must be distinguished from commercial offers, e.g. B. School compass from Focus-Schule or SchulRadar as well as simple school search functions that offer little more than a school address.

function

Schools can use school portraits and their catalog of characteristics to report on their own projects and development processes. In addition to statistical data, additional pedagogical information, e.g. B. special content profiles that are supplemented by the schools themselves. Federal states handle the extent to which data is published differently. In the context of increased school autonomy , school portraits can also provide a form of accountability (e.g. in conjunction with aggregated data for school inspectors ). Users can use the school portraits on the website to find out about schools and, if necessary, make a decision about which school to attend.

The effects of the publication of school data have so far been little researched scientifically.

International

In other countries, performance data and comparative reports are also and mainly published (e.g. Ireland, the Netherlands). School search functions are available in many countries (e.g. USA).

Germany

The state of Saxony was the first federal state to introduce school portraits as a form of public reporting. The Saxon school portraits have been available online in the Saxon school database since 2003, initially for so-called secondary schools and grammar schools, and since 2005 for all school types . The state of Brandenburg has had school portraits across the country since July 2007.

In other federal states there are school search portals, e.g. B. in Berlin and Thuringia .

The German education server offers a comprehensive directory of national school databases.

criticism

At the beginning there were fears in all federal states (including commercial offers) on the part of the trade unions and school interest groups that the available data could be used to rank schools. This criticism has not yet been completely dispelled.

In terms of content, school portraits compete with school homepages depicting schools and school life. These are made by teachers or parents. Since the design of school websites is not standardized, the amount of information and the quality of the presentation vary.
