School stones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are two large erratic boulders near the St. Johann and Paul Forest Chapel on the bed of the Eisgraben at Königssee . They were provided with two memorial plaques by the botanist Joseph August Schultes , which is why they are now called " Schultessteine ". The Schultessteine are a popular resting place for hikes around the Königssee.

background

Josef August Schultes, who rejected the emotional ideas of romanticism, could not entirely escape their influence. Today no one can remember most of his outstanding achievements. But one particularly romantic act has kept its name alive in the Berchtesgadener Land up to our days: the so-called “Schultessteine” on the St. Bartholomä peninsula on Lake Königssee, which is only accessible by ship .

The two large stones with Latin inscriptions on the way from St. Bartholomä to the ice chapel at the foot of the Watzmann have been considered a legendary secret of the Königsee for decades. In the summer of 1826, Schultes had two memorial plaques installed in memory of his daughter Laura, who died early, and her friend Liane on two large boulders near the St. Johann and Paul chapel on the bed of the Eisbach. Liane is Maximiliane, a daughter of the well-known Munich doctor Franz Xaver Häberl .

Two Latin inscriptions are carved on the two stones. They mean (left panel) “The deeply unhappy father places this memorial stone on the soul of his free-born daughter Laura. She was in the 23rd year of life ”and (right panel)“ The soul of the chaste liana, the purest and sincere devoted to the sacred art, he sets this memorial stone. She was 22 years old ”.

The exact circumstances of the death of the two girls are not known, it is believed that they drowned in the Königssee.
