Company history

The young Paul Schwan left his hometown Berlin in 1921 to seek his fortune in the USA. He found this in the small town of Marshall, Minnesota. He met his wife Alma, who gave birth to three sons (Alfred, Bob and Marvin). Here he also applied for US citizenship.

In 1941 Paul Schwan acquired the first shares in an ice cream factory and founded his own dairy in 1948. A few years later, the company's economic situation was rather poor, as government regulations restricted profit opportunities.

But 23-year-old Marvin Schwan found out that higher prices for ice cream could be obtained north of Marshall. Knowing this, he loaded a pickup truck and drove from farm to farm in that area. A complete success and the beginning of Schwan's "Home Delivery Service".

The Schwan's pizza history began in 1970 with an advertisement in the Wall Street Journal . Marvin Schwan was looking for a pizza factory. Production of the successful “Red Baron” brand began just five years later, and others followed over the years. Freschetta, the youngest brand, revolutionized the market in 1996 as the first non-prebaked frozen pizza.

In 1991 Schwan's dared to cross the Atlantic and opened its first branch in Europe. The brands Chicago Town and Tony's have since been produced in Leyland, England. A plant in Mezidon, France, followed in 1996.

Since 1998 the German branch with the name Schwan's Food GmbH existed in Osterweddingen near Magdeburg. At this location pizzas of the premium brands Freschetta, Chicago Town and Tony's were produced. In 2010, the plant was sold to Freiberg Food , which continues to make pizzas there.

In December 2008 the European arm of the company, and thus pizza brands such as Freschetta and Chicago Town , was sold to the Oetker Group .
