Pregnancy-associated osteoporosis
The pregnancy-associated osteoporosis is a rare disorder that during pregnancy and lactation occurs and for bone loss leads. This leads to fractures in the spine . Side effects are severe back pain and physical restrictions on movement. It is believed that the disease occurs 4 times in 1 million pregnancies, but the number of unreported cases is estimated to be higher.
The symptoms usually appear in the first pregnancy, the most common complaints are severe back pain. The exact causes of the disease are not yet known; the symptoms often occur in the last trimon of pregnancy or shortly after birth. Similar symptoms during breastfeeding have also been reported.
diagnosis
An initial suspicion of the disease arises when the woman is either pregnant, has recently given birth or is breastfeeding and complains of very severe back pain. However, since back pain is very normal during and after pregnancy, the pain can often be misinterpreted as general back pain. Diagnosis includes physical examinations, radiological diagnostics , bone density measurements , laboratory tests and histology :
- Physical examination: e.g. B. Height reduction
- Methods for detecting vertebral body fractures: X-rays , magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT)
- Bone density measurement
- Laboratory tests are used to determine other diseases (e.g. hyperthyroidism ) or deficiency symptoms (e.g. vitamin D ).
