The black-breasted barbet ( Lybius rolleti ) or Black-breasted Barbet is a species of bird in the family of African barbets (Lybiidae). The species occurs in Africa north of the equator. No subspecies are described. The IUCN classifies the black breast furrowbill as not endangered ( least concern ).

Appearance

The males reach a wing length of 11 to 11.8 centimeters. The tail length is 7.7 to 8.8 centimeters. The beak is between 3.7 and 4.4 centimeters long. The black-breasted furry beak is one of the largest species within the Lybius genus . Females have similar body measurements to males. As is characteristic of tooth-bearded birds, the sexual dimorphism is only very slight.

Males have a black head, a black front breast and are also shiny black on the top of the body. They only have a white spot on their lower back. At the base of the beak there are bristle-like black feathers that point towards the tip of the beak. The center of the chest and belly are red. The back of the body is white. The rear flanks as well as the thighs and the under tail-coverts are glossy black. The beak is ivory to horn-colored or dull greenish-yellow. The featherless skin around the eyes is bluish gray. The eyes are brown, the legs and feet are gray-brown to gray.

Females are similar to males, but the white sides of their bodies are interspersed with small black spots. Young birds have duller, more blackish-brown plumage. It can be confused with the double-toothed bearded bird , which however has no black throat or chin. He also has light eyes and the featherless skin around his eyes is yellow. The Senegalese furry beak also has a bright red throat and a yellowish region around the eyes.

Distribution area

Black-breasted ruffled beaks are found in Chad, southern Sudan, northeastern Central African Republic, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and northern Uganda. They occur from sea level to altitudes of 2,134 meters.

Way of life

Black-breasted furrows rely on forests and thickets. They also use forest-covered grasslands, the edges of cultivated land, gardens with fruit-bearing trees and are also found on eucalyptus plantations. They live in pairs or in small flocks and are territorial. Their diet consists mainly of fruits such as figs, guavas and mangoes. Insects are also believed to be eaten.

Like most bearded birds, they are cave-breeders and rest and nest in self-hacked tree hollows. Almost nothing is known about the reproductive biology of this species.
