A blackwater aquarium is a specific freshwater aquarium in which the living conditions of tropical waters, which often contain very salty and soft water, are imitated. The name black water aquarium is derived from the fact that the water is brownish in color due to the filtering through peat and the tannins that can be found in the water. Fish and invertebrates, which need these conditions for their well-being, are cared for in such a tank. In contrast to the Amazon basin , the original distribution area of the creatures kept in the basin can be in South America as well as in Asia.

The fish species kept in such an aquarium include, for example, the red neon , the blue neon and the glow light tetra from South America or chocolate gouramis from Southeast Asia .
