The Swedish Volunteer Corps ( Svenska Frivilligkåren ) was a military association made up of Swedish , Norwegian and Danish volunteers and took part in the winter war of 1939/40 on the Finnish side .
history
Sweden was not officially involved in the war, but not entirely neutral. Only volunteer associations could be sent to Finland. The volunteers were deployed on the northern front near Salla from February 28th. The association comprised 9,640 soldiers. In addition, the corps provides 25 aircraft that served in the Swedish Voluntary Air Force , also known as F19s . The Swedes were also involved in the defense of Turku with an anti - aircraft battery . The volunteers demonstrated their strong Nordic solidarity by using the "four fraternal hands" as a symbol for their troop insignia. The four hands represented Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
A total of 8,402 Swedes fought alongside Finland, with 1,010 Danes and 895 Norwegians. Their losses amounted to 28 dead, 50 wounded and 140 sideline cases due to frostbite.
