The sulfur grass chirp ( Elymana sulphurella ) is a dwarf cicada from the subfamily of the chirps (Deltocephalinae).

features

The sulfur grass chirp has a length of 4.5–5.5 mm. The medium-sized cicadas are predominantly yellow-green in color. The forewings have transparent cells and yellow wing veins . An important characteristic of the cicada species is the black colored pit at the base of the antennae .

Similar species

Elymana kozhevnikovi looks very similar to sulfur grass chirp and can usually only be distinguished by examining the male genitalia.

Occurrence

The species was originally only found in the western Palearctic . There their distribution area extends over large parts of Europe as well as North Africa and the Middle East . The species was apparently introduced into North America. The similar cicada species Elymana kozhevnikovi occurs in contrast to the sulfur grass chirp in Europe only in the eastern part and is also absent in the Mediterranean area.

Way of life

The habitat of the cicada species is usually formed by dry grassland biotopes and moist to dry grassland with tall grass. The forage plants of the sulfur grass chirp include various sweet grasses (Poaceae). The adult cicadas are usually seen from late June to mid-October. The species forms one generation per year and hibernates as an egg.
