Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt

Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt (born May 20, 1785 in Lärketorp in the municipality of Mjölby in Östergötland , † December 23, 1874 in Lund ) was a Swedish naturalist, entomologist and university lecturer. He worked mainly on Diptera (Diptera) and Hymenoptera (Hymenoptera). Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ JWZetterst. ".

Live and act

Zetterstedt was the son of the surveyor Erik Petrus Zetterstedt and Hedvig (nee Treutiger). He attended school and grammar school in Linköping and studied from 1805 at Lund University , where he was a student of Anders Jahan Retzius . In 1808 he submitted his dissertation botanica De plantis cibariis Romanorum to this. In 1810 he received his doctorate in botany. In 1822 he became a professor and in 1839 Carl Adolph Agardh followed as professor of botany and practical economics. From 1846 to 1847 he was rector of the university.

He works particularly as an entomologist. His collection of Diptera and Orthoptera are in the Zoological Museum at Lund University.

The Swedish entomologist Anders Gustaf Dahlbom (1806-1859) was one of his students .
