Silence rose
The term “silent rose” means a stylized rose that can often be found on the wall of a knight's hall . It symbolized the promise that the spoken word would not leave the room.
background
In ancient times the rose was a symbol of secrecy and love . Originally this parable comes from mythology and religion . A closed flower was a symbol of a divine secret. Example: The Venus child Cupid gave the god of silence a rose so that he would keep quiet about his mother's goings-on.
In addition to the aforementioned knights' halls, it can also be found every now and then in monasteries , above confessionals or in meeting rooms. A preserved rose of silence in a knight's hall is in Eltz Castle near Münstermaifeld .
The rose symbol can often be found on medieval utensils such as cutlery , jugs and mugs . From this it is deduced that a guest has to keep quiet about the words spoken in the house.
The silent rose is also used to derive the Latin phrase “ sub rosa ” or the German equivalent “under the rose” (meaning “under the seal of secrecy”).
