The Swiss railway uniforms are the uniforms of the Swiss railway personnel. Over time, they developed more and more from uniforms to work clothes .

tasks

The original clothing of the railway employees had several tasks: Recognition and attribution of the wearer to the company; Protection against weather, dirt and mechanical influences; Clarification of the position of their bearers in the social structure (authority, respect, follow-up). All three requirements were best met through the development of special uniforms. Over the course of more than 110 years, the framework conditions have changed, namely the working conditions of railway staff (e.g. through electrification ), their social position, their demands for comfort, mobility and materials used, as well as general living standards. Accordingly, the idea of “ uniform ” changed to the idea of “work clothes”.

history

From 1902 to 1932

Railway guard by uniformed railway workers during the First World War

The "Regulations No. 23 Regarding Uniforms “of March 22, 1902, the uniforms of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) for their civil servants, employees and workers were regulated. Before that, each forerunner used its own workwear.

The employees had to wear the prescribed uniforms for every “duty”, but were not allowed to put them on on rest days or in “vacation cases”. Everyone had to pay for cleaning and maintenance.

For example, the station management received : a cap "made of fine dark blue cloth with black silk ribbon, with gold cord on the upper edge of the headband, ¾ Tour gold embroidery with an embroidered cockade with the white cross in the red field above the center of the embroidery and above the gold-embroidered wing wheel" including a red one Cap cover, a coat made of black cloth (Marengo) with belt, lying collar, lined, double row of buttons with five large black corozo buttons each, four identical buttons on the belt, two outer side pockets with insertable flaps, one inner and one outer breast pocket, length up to Middle of the lower legs ", a uniform skirt" with civilian cut (frock coat), made of dark blue cloth, lined, black silk velvet collar to turn down, with half a wing wheel on each end of the collar, double row of buttons with five flat black corozo buttons and two of the same on the back, an inner breast pocket , one inner front and two back lap pockets “ e Pants “made of dark blue cloth without passepoils, with two side pockets cut in the seams, made of black cloth for winter and of lighter cloth for summer”, as well as a vest “made of dark blue cloth with a row of flat black corozo buttons”.

Wire pullers ” (those who installed (overhead line) catenary wires during the electrification of the railway) were each given a hat, a coat and a blouse.

Sailors on the SBB steam boats were each given a cap "without gold braid, with a gold-plated anchor without rope", a felt hat, a coat, a cloth jacket, trousers, summer trousers and a raincoat "made of rubber, paletot cut with two rows of five black each Corozo buttons, two side pockets, length to the middle of the lower legs ”.

Uniforms were also available for women: female railway attendants were given a coat with a cape .

The production was carried out by the costume Kaiser company .

1932 to 1953

1953 to 1970

The uniforms are made of thick, heavy fabric with stars that show the rank of the wearer. The respective rank could also be read from the number of stripes on the hat. Gradually, the uniforms were modernized (e.g. turn-down collars instead of stand-up cuffs, ties) and made more practical (e.g. breast pockets, significantly shorter jackets). In 1957 the farm assistants received a gray dress.

1970 to 1978

The SBB logo above the breast pockets will be standardized, the pattern on the chief officer’s cap will be slightly changed. The blue border on the conductor's collar disappears. In 1972, the female employees in the train dispatch service received a Bordeaux red deux pièces with a hat.

1978 to 1985

Uniform with the SBB logo, approx. 1980–82

The jackets of the conductor, platoon leader and senior platoon leader are uniform in terms of shape and cut, and shirts and ties are now also worn by all three ranks. Today's SBB logo appears on the (simplified) hats and uniform jackets.

1985 to 1992

The ties of the platoon leaders and senior platoon leaders have diagonal stripes, the jackets have a red logo below the breast pockets.

1992 to 2008

Two railway employees without hats

The obligation to wear a hat is abolished, the uniform is changing more and more in the direction of normal work clothing.

From 1997 only orange overalls with reflective warning stripes are offered.

2008 to 2016

In 2011, uniform work clothing for train drivers will be introduced again: red shirt, dark blue trousers. Wearing the uniform is voluntary for existing locomotive staff and compulsory for new employees.

As of 2016

On the occasion of the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel , SBB is introducing new work clothes: from December 2016 (train staff) and from March 2017 (counter staff). The most striking features are: a red collar and anthracite-colored fabric instead of the previously used dark blue.

The new outfit was designed by Elisabetta Birmelin (Birmelin Design Studio, Oberschleissheim / D). Some of the material used was specially developed for SBB, such as recycled PET for the parkas ; Organic cotton and virgin wool are also used as sustainable materials.

One representative each from the train and counter staff was involved in developing the new clothes. This was followed by a practical test by train and counter staff (women and men).

The clothing was and is also a contribution in kind by the company for its employees. It is currently given according to a point system, where 1 point corresponds to around 1 Swiss franc. 755 points are credited upon entry, and the choice of clothing is free. Examples: short-sleeved shirt 20 points, belt 15 points. In addition, every train conductor receives 2 pairs of shoes a year.

The central work clothing shop of SBB is located at the Olten railway junction .
