The costume rental was founded in 1882 by Ludwig Julius «J. Louis »Kaiser to complement the hairdressing salon of his father, Johann« Hans »Emanuel Kaiser, founded in Basel . In 1894 it became the general partnership «Meili & Kaiser». The first major orders included the Basel parade in 1892 for the 500th anniversary of the unification of the two Basels and the Basel Day at the Swiss National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896. In 1896, the company was founded as a sole proprietorship under the name “J. Louis Kaiser »continued. Until before the First World War , the business experienced a considerable boom, as at that time parades and festivals were an essential part of social life. In 1931 the company name was changed to “Swiss Costume and Flag Factory J. Louis Kaiser AG”. In 1959 the company merged with the company of master tailor Walter Gschwind and from then on, in addition to historical costumes, modern uniforms for the police , fire brigade and SBB railway employees as well as flags were produced. In 1962, the business was relocated to Allschwil in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, as the costume collection grew steadily. In 1973 the company was relocated to its current location in Aesch BL .
