Swiss Insurance Association
The Swiss Insurance Association (SIA) is the umbrella organization for the private insurance industry in Switzerland.
aims
The Swiss private insurers are of particular economic importance. You take on financial risks from companies and private individuals and cover them. So that the insurers can continue to perform this task in the future, the SIA is committed to what it sees as economically sound framework conditions.
The SIA is particularly active in the following areas:
- Social security (occupational benefits, life insurance, health insurance, accident insurance)
- Insurance law and insurance supervision
- Competition and regulation
- Economic and tax policy
- Climate and environment
- Prevention
- education
Member societies
Around 80 insurance companies belong to the association, some of which are linked to one another in corporate groups. The member companies account for more than 85 percent of the premiums earned by private insurers on the Swiss market. Around 80 small and large national and international direct insurers and reinsurers with 47,000 employees in Switzerland are affiliated to the SIA.
structure
The SIA is within the meaning of Art. 60ff. Civil Code organized in the legal form of an association. The general assembly elects the most important functionaries. The board defines the association's goals and strategy and monitors the activities of the office. In committees and commissions, employees of the member companies develop solutions in the interests of the entire insurance industry. The office is divided into three departments (“Insurance Policy and Regulation”, “Public Affairs and Communication” and “Education and Employer Policy”).
Historical development
The first private insurance companies were founded in the 19th century. Many of them are still on the market today, such as Mobiliar (founded in 1826), Swiss Life (1857), Helvetia (1858), Basler (1863), Swiss Re (1863), or Zurich (1872) (see also Winterthur Group ). The «Association of Concessioned Swiss Insurance Companies» was founded in 1900, and 21 insurance companies were involved. The SIA emerged from him.
Supervisory authority
The member companies are subject to the supervision of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA . With the federal law on the Federal Financial Market Supervision passed by the federal councils on June 22, 2007 , the Federal Office for Private Insurance (FOPI), the Federal Banking Commission (SFBC) and the Anti-Money Laundering Control Office (Kst GwG) became in the Finma merged. The insurance industry in this sense does not include the health insurance companies with compulsory basic insurance, the Suva Swiss Accident Insurance Fund, the cantonal building insurance companies and the autonomous pension funds. Finma provides protection for the insured and in particular ensures that the insurance companies are able to meet their contractual obligations at all times.
Memberships
The SIA is a member of national and international associations and organizations. As a representative of the Swiss insurance industry, the SIA advocates the interests and concerns of its members in particular at economiesuisse , the Swiss Employers' Association and the Swiss Chamber of Commerce. Membership in the European insurance association Insurance Europe and the world insurance association GFIA is particularly important .
